The houses were erected in 1812 by W. Gabbett using money raised by public subscription-mainly from the rich property owners in the district. On completion there was a dispute between the Gabbetts and the subscribers and eventually the houses became private properties. Number 4 became the C. of Ireland rectory (hence the name Glebe House). At the rear of the Tontines there used to be the remains of a small hall where Countess Markievics addressed the local volunteers previous to the 1916 Easter Rising.
